The Australia Effect

Australia. Wow. It’s genuinely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I completely understand why people pack up, move there, and never look back. The sun, the sea, the lifestyle, everything just feels cleaner, healthier, and more free. People seem to actually value a work–life balance, and let’s be honest, the pay isn’t too shabby either. If it weren’t for the small issue of it being over 9,000 miles away, moving would be an absolute no-brainer.

But here’s the thing, starting my life all over again and leaving everyone I love behind? That’s what stops me. The distance isn’t just about miles; it’s the idea of being a world away from the people who make me feel grounded.

Apparently, this Christmas every man and their dog decided to do the same trip, so yes, we were basic as hell. But still, I had the best time, and these are my highlights, opinions, and mildly chaotic takeaways.

Jet Lag Is No Joke

Oh my god, jet lag! I have never felt tiredness like it. Imagine trying to hold a conversation while your body screams at you to lie down in the middle of the pavement. The only reason we survived was by full-on finessing day one, powering through, going straight out, and drinking copious amounts of awful wine. If it wasn’t for that liquid motivation, we’d have been in bed by 5 p.m.

You Actually Feel Safe

This one took me by surprise. You genuinely feel more relaxed and less on edge than in London. People are happier, friendlier, and seemingly less out to nick your phone. You can leave your stuff on the beach and not immediately assume someone’s going to rob you blind, imagine that!

Where are the Ausies

It honestly took us a few weeks to meet actual Australians; everyone is British or Irish. Don't get me wrong, we were with a very UK crowd because we knew people who lived there, but even when out, we spoke to more expats than locals! And the Aussie men, ugh. Alright, I didn’t get with any Australian men, but let’s just say the rumours feel accurate. That TikTok girl wasn’t wrong, the energy is very low-effort, nonchalant, and apparently not very “down under,” if you catch my drift. Lazy vibes everywhere.

The Cost of Living Shock

Believe it or not, Australia is cheaper than London! I couldn’t believe it either. Clothes, eating out, Ubers... all cheaper. I was thriving, halving the dollar every time I bought something. £3 for a cab back to my accommodation? Sign me up, forever.

The Coffee Debate

Look, I was told Australia had the best coffee in the world. Don’t hate me, but… it’s good, not mind-blowing. London has caught up. You can find amazing coffee in pretty much any city now, so while I enjoyed it, I wasn’t as blown away as I’d been warned I would be.

Final Thoughts

All in all, I couldn’t recommend Australia more. I only explored Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth this time, but next trip I definitely want to go off the beaten path and be a bit more adventurous. I’ll 100% be back, to live we shall see, but definitely to play.

Australia left me relaxed, re‑energised, and admittedly, questioning everything. But one thing’s for sure, nothing beats a bit of sun, sea, and perspective to remind you how good life can feel when you actually stop and live it.
